Takes Pride in World Refugee Day
Internationally, World Refugee Day is a day of celebration honoring the courage, strength, and resilience of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homes under threats of persecution, conflict, and violence. This year, Rainbow Welcome’s partner, Refugee Resettlement & Immigration Services of Atlanta (RRISA), is partnering with the Atlanta PRIDE Committee, Inc. to raise awareness of issues affecting the LGBT refugee and asylee communities of metro Atlanta. Service providers, LGBT community members, LGBT refugees and asylees, and allies will gather to learn more about the experiences of LGBT refugees and asylees and celebrate their accomplishments and contributions to Atlanta.
"Taking Pride in World Refugee Day," an event co-sponsored by RRISA and the Atlanta PRIDE Committee will be held Tuesday, June 19th from 7-9pm at the Philip Rush Center, located at 1530 Dekalb Ave. in Atlanta, Georgia. The event will feature a screening of the documentary film, "Welcome to Shelbyville," a performance by local Congolese dance group MBONDAFRIKA, and a presentation from a transgender refugee who fled Iraq. This event offers the unique opportunity for LGBT refugees and asylees to build community and find support and strength from community members who are passionate about facilitating their social integration.
The Rainbow Welcome Initiative is proud to partner with RRISA, one of six refugee resettlement agencies throughout the country currently working with Heartland Alliance to develop and implement best practices for working with LGBT refugees and asylees. RRISA carries out projects to benefit the LGBT refugee/asylee community. This joint event with the Atlanta PRIDE Committee is an exciting demonstration of their efforts to build bridges between Atlanta's diverse LGBT communities.
